The Land

For five thousand years, this landscape was the ancestral home of vibrant indigenous cultures, including the Patayan, Walapai, Yavapai, and Mohave peoples, who lived in deep harmony with its natural rhythms. In the 20th century, the footprint of the land shifted. From 1910 to 1940, it hosted a "pick and shovel" manganese mining operation, which extracted raw ore directly from the earth without on-site processing. Decades later, from the 1970s into the 2000s, the property served as a remote survivalist family compound.

In addition to our trauma-informed spiritual retreats, our sanctuary serves as an active, living classroom for ecological stewardship. We believe that healing people and healing the earth go hand in hand. To share these vital skills with the wider world, we offer specialized educational programs open to anyone passionate about climate resilience, conservation, and sustainable living.
Through immersive, hands-on workshops, participants can learn:

• Land Regeneration: Practical methods to rebuild depleted soil, restore biodiversity, and heal landscapes impacted by historical overuse.

• Water Retention Techniques: Innovative earthworks and water-harvesting strategies designed to capture, store, and maximize every drop of moisture in dry climates. [1]

• Arid Region Landscaping: Sustainable planting methods that utilize native, drought-tolerant flora to create thriving, resilient 
   

Alongside our wilderness regeneration, we operate a thriving, sustainable homestead designed to feed our community from the inside out. Through thoughtful permaculture placement, we have integrated a gentle network of food production spaces that directly sustain our retreat participants and volunteers.
Our sustainable agricultural ecosystem includes:

• Friendly Livestock: A joyful mix of goats and chickens who play a vital role in natural pest control, soil fertilization, and fresh daily harvests. 

• Abundant Food Spaces: Organic vegetable gardens and newly-planted fruit and nut orchards specifically selected to thrive in our unique arid environment.

• True Food Security: Fresh, nutrient-dense produce, eggs, and farm goods harvested directly from the land to provide healthy, restorative meals for everyone staying or volunteering at the sanctuary.

While the land remains profoundly beautiful, its 20th-century inhabitants significantly altered the delicate desert ecosystem by removing native flora and fauna. Today, our core ecological goal is to reverse this historical degradation. Through permaculture principles and arid-land regeneration, we are dedicated to completely restoring the biodiversity of this unique wilderness, healing the scars of the past, and allowing the native ecosystem to flourish once again.

True ecological restoration is measured by the return of life. As we have invested in regenerating our soils and protecting our wilderness borders, we have been deeply moved to witness nature responding in real time. The sanctuary land is transforming back into a vibrant, safe corridor for the local wildlife that belongs here.
Thanks to these regenerative efforts, we have joyfully documented the return of numerous native species reclaiming their ancestral home, including:

• Apex Predators & Hunters: Coyote, kit fox, grey fox, and badger.

• Elusive Desert Mammals: Ringtail cat, spotted skunk, raccoon, and the reclusive badger.

• Majestic Birds of Prey: Nesting bald eagles and red-tailed hawks soaring overhead.

• Desert Icons & Wildlife: Roadrunners darting through the brush, alongside a flourishing host of local and migrating birds who use our sanctuary as a vital resting stop

As we progress through our current efforts and spiritual practices, it is our hope to return the sanctuary site back to the vibrant desert oasis it has always been.
